1997 Flood "By the Number"

In total the 1997 Flood caused an estimated $1.5 Billion in damages to Grand Forks.  83 percent of the residential property in the city had some sort of damage.  The fact that Grand Forks has not only rebuilt after the flood but has thrived is a testament to our citizens and volunteers who helped us get back on our feet.

Pay It Forward

The City of Grand Forks received help from all over the country during our recovery and we learned many lessons along the way.  We have been able to take those lessons learned and have tried to help other communities as they try to recover from their own natural disasters.

Grand Forks has worked with the following communities during their own recoveries:

St. Bernard Parrish, LA
Cedar Rapids, IA
Minot, ND
Findley, OH
Biloxi, MS

The City of Grand Forks has also produced a Lessons Learned Handbook that other communities can reference.
